ARMISTICE TURTORA IN HER OWN WORDS
Armistice Turtora In Her Own Words is a heartfelt and inspiring story. Armistice shares her humble beginnings, how she found her voice through the League of Women Voters and how she passionately believed that it is one’s duty to serve and volunteer for their community. Armistice Turtora’s civic duty transformed her city with beautiful open spaces including “The Bowl” at Van Dyck Park dedicated in her honor and with public art like “The Dancer” located in front of the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center. “Armistice Turtora In Her Own Words” is a six minute documentary playing at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center and is archived in the museum's permanent collection. “We conducted the interview on Armistice Day, her 90th birthday. We captured a magical interview on a beautiful autumn day. When we were finished, we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Mrs. Turtora and ate cake. It is a day we will all proudly remember.” 2018 TRT 6:30 |

THE CITY BAND: CITY OF FAIRFAX'S MUSICAL AMBASSADOR
Formed in 1969 as a small, summer-season group, the band has grown into one of Northern Virginia's best-known community music ensembles, among a small number of the Nation's community bands to achieve high standards. In recognition of its high musical standards and achievements over the years, the band was awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll from The John Philip Sousa Foundation in 2004, one of North America's most prestigious awards for community concert bands. NORA'S ARK: ENRICHING CHILDREN WITH JAZZ
A documentary chronicling the recording of a cast album and production CD for Nora's Ark, a Jazz Musical by Eli Yamin and Clifford Carlson of The Jazz Drama Program. The film also traces the journey of how the jazz musical was developed and how exposure to jazz in a theatrical way impacts children's lives. The music was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York and features the singers from The Brooklyn Youth Chorus. LADY TITANS: A TITLE IX VICTORY
Lady Titans: A Title IX Victory includes Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes as the film's narrator and presenter. The documentary tells the story about the T.C. Williams High School women's crew team lead by its determined coach Dee Campbell. As he teaches them to row with grace and abandon, the crew dreams of winning a national championship with each sunrise row. Gold medals aside, it is the life lessons that strengthens their character and fills their hearts. The film also raises awareness about the monumental strides made by Title IX - the 1972 law that prohibits sexual discrimination in any educational program or activity within federally funded institutions. MESSENGER FROM RUSSIA
Messenger From Russia was nationally broadcasted on National Geographic Today in March 2002 and again in 2003. The two-part magazine style film tells the remarkable story about Valery Ponomarev, a jazz trumpet player from Russia. Ponomarev escaped the Old Soviet Union in 1972 to play with his jazz heroes in New York City. In 1976, his dream became a reality when he was invited to join his hero’s band, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Valery Ponomarev is now a U.S. citizen.
